I found I could say things with colour and shapes that I couldn’t say any other way – things I had no words for. – Georgia O’Keefe

Who Will I Be Working With?
My name is Nicole and I'll be your creative companion during your art therapy journey with FireFlower Art Therapy.
I am a certified clinical art psychotherapist, counselling therapist, and ETC practitioner who specializes in art therapy for children, youth, young adults, and mature adults facing personal, social, and systemic challenges.
Creative self expression has supported me through my hard times and I feel honoured to walk with you on your own creative healing journey.
What Is Art Therapy?
Art making has been used to support communication and wellness throughout human history. Art therapy creates a unique therapeutic environment by combining psychological theory with creative practice. In art therapy, making art becomes the pathway to insight and healing. When relaxed and focused on colours, shapes, and textures, during the creative process, deeper emotions and insights can naturally emerge.
During an art therapy session I can help match questions, techniques, and materials to your current emotional state and therapeutic objectives, always ensuring that you feel comfortable and supported in your creative exploration.
After creating, you and I may explore what emerged during the art-making process. These conversations often lead to valuable insights and new perspectives on your experiences and challenges.
Is there Evidence for Using Creativity for Healing?
-
Creating art can help support emotional release, expression, stress reduction, relaxation, self discovery, insight, the development and maintenance of new coping skills, and improved communication.
-
The creative process activates different areas of the brain than verbal communication, often accessing memories, emotions, and insights that might not emerge through talk therapy alone.
-
Creating art releases endorphins and can reduce cortisol levels, providing natural stress relief and mood enhancement. The focused attention required for art-making can help to quiet racing thoughts and promote emotional regulation.
-
Art therapy allows people to process difficult experiences without having to verbalize them immediately. The symbolic nature of artistic expression can make overwhelming experiences feel more manageable while still honouring their significance.

I Am Not "Creative" Enough for Art Therapy!
Many clients have a similar worry when entering art therapy because hurtful past experiences with creative expression can make art making feel like an intimidating and vulnerable experience at first.
Art therapy is for everyone including those who feel disconnected from their creativity and not very confident in their abilities. We can work with this feeling in art therapy and with with some patience, courage, and curiosity I have seen a shift in this feeling for many clients.
I am here to support you while you explore and reconnect with your inherent creative capacity.
Do I Have To Make "Good" Art?
You don't need to feel like an artist in art therapy and there's no right or wrong way to make art. The goal in art therapy is to use creativity as a method for understanding yourself more deeply and finding new pathways toward growth and resilience. Our focus is always on the process of creation rather than the final product and you will not be judged, critiqued, or analyzed based on what you create.
You and all that you bring to the studio deserve to be honoured.

"I highly recommend Nicole!
She brings compassion, understanding, playfulness and professionalism to each session. The art invitations are always in tune with what was needed to be explored in that moment. She provides a safe and enriching environment that feels welcoming to explore one's emotions and challenges. I appreciate the space she provides!"

"And life revives, and blossoms once again."- Emily Pauline Johnson
In her poem Fire-Flowers, the poet Emily Pauline Johnson describes a wildflower species native to the Canadian Rocky Mountains commonly referred to as Fireweed (Epilobium angustifolium). Fireweed earned its name due to its rapid propagation in areas that have been devastated by forest fires or clear cutting. In addition to being nutritious and having anti-inflammatory properties, Fireweed also helps to rebuild a healthy ecosystem. These Fire-Flowers are often held as beautiful metaphors for the new life and healing that are possible after incredible hardship.
